Winter Tree Identification Course Offered in February 2025

In February, ReGreen Springfield, in partnership with the Greening the Gateway Cities Program, the U.S. Forest Service, and the City of Springfield Forestry Division is offering a special two-part workshop series to teach participants how to identify trees in the winter landscape. The workshop will focus on recognizing trees by their structure, bark, and buds, as well as sharing essential winter maintenance techniques. At the end of the program, participants will have the skills and resources needed to master tree identification and care during the colder months.

The workshop series consists of two sessions: a virtual introduction and an in-person guided walk. The first virtual session will take place on February 19, 2024, from 6:00 – 7:30 PM via Zoom and will feature experts from the U.S. Forest Service and the Forestry Division, who will provide a comprehensive overview of winter tree identification. The second in-person session will be held on February 22, 2024, from 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM at Forest Park, located at 295 Sumner Avenue, Springfield, MA. During this session, arborists from Springfield Forestry will lead participants on a plant walk to practice identification skills and demonstrate tree maintenance techniques. We look forward to seeing you!
