Community Tree Planting Coming to the McKnight Neighborhood on April 18th

The McKnight Neighborhood Council, the Springfield Greening the Gateway Cities Program, the Springfield Forestry Division, ReGreen Springfield, and the XiXi Omega Sorority are proud to partner on a community tree planting effort to bring new shade trees to the neighborhood.

The planting will take place on April 18, 2026 with volunteers and partners gathering at 11:00 AM at 377 St. James Avenue before heading out to planting locations throughout the neighborhood. This collaborative effort reflects a shared commitment to improving the quality of life in McKnight through greening, neighborhood beautification, and environmental stewardship.

As part of this initiative, new trees will be planted in the treebelt area in front of selected residents’ homes. These trees will provide many important benefits to the neighborhood for years to come. Shade trees help improve air quality, reduce temperatures during hot weather, and create a more attractive, welcoming streetscape. A healthy tree-lined street adds beauty and character to the neighborhood while helping build a greener, healthier community for residents, families, and future generations.
