News on Tree Planting in East Forest Park Coming Soon

Please check back here to find the latest information on the upcoming tree plantings planned for the East Forest Park Neighborhood.  Expected to begin this fall, this effort aims to regreen the streets and parks of the neighborhood over the next few planting seasons.

First Tree Planted in Regreening Springfield Effort

The first public tree to be planted in Springfield, following the June 1st tornado, was planted on August 11th in Nathan Bill Park.  The American Elm tree, donated by PeoplesBank, was planted during a ceremony attended by Mayor Domenic Sarno, PeoplesBank Senior Vice President Shelia King-Goodwin, Vice President Susan B. Wilson, Parks Superintendent Patrick Sullivan, City Forester Ed Casey and Phillip Robell with the US Forest Service. 

Over a dozen volunteers from the US Forest Service Urban Forest Strke Team, who were in Springfield assessing dmage to trees, attend the event.  Other PeoplesBank officials, neighbrhood representatives and neighbors of the East Forest Park neighborhood attended the event.

Efforts to plan for the replanting of trees in Springfield are currently underway, using information provided by the US Forest Service Strike Team, the City’s tree inventory and consultation with residents, neighborhood associations and other community groups.

Tree Survey Work Underway in East Forest Park

A team of Certified Arborists, under the direction of the US Forest Service Northastern Strike Team, is surveying the East Forest Park Neighborhood, in an effort to determine potential locations for new tree plantings.  The work of the Strike Team, comprised of tree experts from agencies and organizations throught New England and Midl-Atlantic, was mobilzed in an effort to assist in the regreening  efforts underway in Springfield.  Earlier this month, members of the team suveyed all of the street trees in the entire tornado zone, in an effort to confirm the safety and survival potential of trees that remain growing along Springfield’s streets.

The Strike Team will continue their work over the next few week, covering all of the neigborhoods in the tornado impact zone, and identifying locations for future tree plantings along the public way.
