New Trees Planted in South End

On September 15, 2011, a team of volunteers from the Springfield Arbor Allies planted 20 new shade trees in the South End Neighborhood. The trees were planted along portions of William, Magaret and Main Streets, as well as on East Columbus Avenue. The tree species include Hawthorn and Black Tupelo. These are were among 40 new trees planted on that day, which included additional trees in the Forest Park neighborhood.

Please check back here to find the latest information on the upcoming tree plantings planned for the South End Neighborhood.  Expected to begin this fall, this effort aims to regreen the streets and parks of the neighborhood over the next few planting seasons.

Tree Survey Work Underway Along South End Streets

A team of Certified Arborists, under the direction of the US Forest Service Northastern Strike Team, is surveying the South End Neighborhood, in an effort to determine potential locations for new tree plantings.  The work of the Strike Team, comprised of tree experts from agencies and organizations throught New England and Midl-Atlantic, was mobilzed in an effort to assist in the regreening  efforts underway in Springfield.  Earlier this month, members of the team suveyed all of the street trees in the entire tornado zone, in an effort to confirm the safety and survival potential of trees that remain growing along Springfield’s streets.

The Strike Team will continue their work over the next few weeks, covering all of the neigborhoods in the tornado impact zone, and identifying locations for future tree plantings along the public way.
