New Trees Installed Along Sumner Avenue

Working with the City of Springfield and neighborhood residents, ReGreen Springfield installed a new row of street trees along Sumner Avenue, one of the city's busiest commercial corridors.

Sumner Avenue is one of Springfield's most traveled streets — and until recently, one of its least shaded. The new street trees will provide canopy cover for pedestrians, reduce the urban heat island effect along the corridor, and improve the overall character of the streetscape.

This project was made possible through a partnership between ReGreen Springfield, the City of Springfield Department of Public Works, and residents and business owners along Sumner Avenue who advocated for greening their street.

Species were selected for their tolerance of urban conditions — compacted soils, road salt, and limited root space — while still providing meaningful canopy at maturity.

The newly planted trees will be monitored and watered by ReGreen Springfield stewards through their first two growing seasons. Residents near the planting sites are encouraged to help by reporting any signs of stress or damage.
