The Tree Owner’s Manual

One common issue facing our urban forests is the fact that trees are dying prematurely. Many are planted improperly, setting them up for failure. Many do not receive regular maintenance. And few are adequately protected during construction projects. To help remedy this issue, the Forest Service has created the Tree Owner’s Manual.

Just like the owner’s manual that comes with automobiles and appliances, the Tree Owner’s Manual includes a parts list, instructions for installation, tips for troubleshooting common issues, recommended service, and more.

Muchos no reciben mantenimiento regular.

manual coverUrban Trees, Stormwater & Green Streets: Community Workbook

Urban forests are often described as ecosystems of trees and other vegetation in and around communities that may consist of street and yard trees, vegetation within parks and along public rights of way and water systems. Urban forests provide communities with environmental, economic and social benefits and habitat for fish and wildlife. Thus, urban forests are not only about the trees in the city, but rather, they are a critical part of the green infrastructure that makes up the city ecosystem.

Trees act as sponges that keep water onsite and recharge the groundwater. A typical urban forest of 10,000 trees will retain 10 million gallons of rainwater per year. Trees reduce the amount of runoff and pollutants into streams and riverways. While manmade drainage systems such sewers and storm drains accelerate the flow of polluted water through community, trees slow it down and clean the water. And, tree canopies and roots protect the soil from erosion.

This manual helps to detail the value of trees in the city, and provides resource materials to help you explore the urban forest around you.  Click on the image to download a copy of the manual.

greening the x coverGreening the ‘X’ – Conway School of Design Report

he “X” is a historic – and busy! – intersection of Sumner Avenue, Belmont Avenue and Dickinson Street in Springfield, MA the most populous city in the Connecticut River watershed. Through the use of green infrastructure, “Greening the X” attempts to increase the ecological performance of the “X” streetscape while also improving the human experience of a dense, urban neighborhood. By considering community needs gathered during two participatory design workshops and incorporating the recent proposed renovations of the intersection, this project offers ecological design possibilities that infiltrate water and reduce the likelihood of a combined sewer overflow (CSO) event. Complete with a toolbox of useful Green Street design components, this project is intended to serve as a case study for the viability of Green Streets across the City of Springfield.

Understanding Green Streets

This resource from the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission outlines how Green streets can provide cost effective infrastructure solutions to reduce and manage stormwater runoff and flooding through the use of green infrastructure facilities – small, decentralized, natural or engineered
systems that utilize soils and vegetation as a primary treatment mechanism.
